An allopathic doctor Samuel Hahnemann was the founder of homoeopathy. He was the first man who felt that allopathic medicines having harmful side effects were not suitable for his patients. He was so much clear and confident in his perception that he gave up allopathic practice and adopted profession of translating different books in German language.
During translation of Dr William Colon’s Materia medica he found Cinchona (China) medicine as remedy for malaria due to its bitter taste. He thought that if a medicine can cure a disease by virtue of its taste or some other medicinal properties then what would be if the same medicine is used by a healthy person.
He decided to do an experiment and started to eating cinchona daily. After some days he experienced shivering, drowsiness, fever, thirst and redness of the face. He stopped eating it and all the symptoms vanished slowly. He repeated this experiment frequently and found the same phenomena. He named this experiment as Drug Proving, by which he was able to prove the characteristic symptoms of any drug on healthy persons. He continued drug proving with the help of his friends.
At last he found practical law that a drug having medicinal properties can cure the disease symptom if it has the ability to produce the same symptoms. Later on this law is known as “Similia Similibus Curentur” that means, “like cures like”. Dr Samuel Hahnemann defined the relation between disease and drug; and named it as Homoeopathy.
In homoeopathy the main focus is on the symptoms of the disease and the characteristics of drug. The matching or resemblance in both is the key of success. According to homoeopathic philosophy as explained by Dr Hahnemann and his followers, patients are treated in the light of their symptoms corresponding to the drug symptoms but there is no specific medicine for any disease-name in homoeopathic medical system.
Corresponding Remedy, Single remedy, minimum dose, human based proving and study of patient’s symptoms individually is the key principles of this medical system.
In 1796 Dr Samuel Hahnemann explained homoeopathic medical treatment in detail in a journal. He had to face severe opposition of from his fellow doctors but he kept his struggle continued. After continues drug proving and search work for years, he published first Homoeopathic Materia Medica (Pura) in 1801. It contains 67 proved medicines.
Further he published Organon of Medicine (first edition) in 1808, describing the findings, principles, laws and their explanation in detail. Another well known publication is “Chronic Diseases” by Dr Samuel Hahnemann. He died 2 July, 1943 and his name is written in golden words in the history of medical sciences.
