What is Malignant Mesothelioma?

A cancer type that occurs in thin layers of tissues which are mostly covering most of the internal organs (mesotheliom) of body is called malignant mesothelioma. In general, cancer begins when a series of genetic mutations occur within a cell, causing the cell to grow and multiply out of control.
Mesothelioma is further divided into different types according to its location in the body. For example, malignant mesothelioma affects mostly the tissues that surround he lungs and due to its particular location it is called pleural malignant mesothelioma. This type is very mostly common as compared to other types which are located in different body parts like tissues in the abdomen( pleural mesothelioma), tissues surrounding the heart or testicles.
Malignant mesothelioma is considered an aggressive and deadly form of cancer. Treatments are available for mesothelioma but these are not 100% and in some cases cure becomes impossible. So during treatment of mesothelioma the utmost efforts are made to keep the patient comfortable as much as possible.
What are the Mesothelioma Symptoms?
Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years (or more) after exposure to asbestos. Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma are found different according to the location of the disease. Here are given symptoms of mesothelioma:-
Pleural mesothelioma symptoms.
This type of cancer affects the tissues surrounding the lungs and has following symptoms to indicate the disease:-
- Chest wall pain
- Coughing with pain
- Fatigue or anemia
- Pain located under rib cage
- Feeling of uneasy and shortness of breathing
- Tissue lump prominent under the skin on chest
- Weight loss without sufficient cause
- Pleural effusion or fluid surrounding the lung
- Wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
- Blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up (hemoptysis)
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
It affects the tissues in the abdomen and its signs and symptoms are as under:-
- Ascites or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
- A mass in the abdomen
- Problems with bowel function
- Pain in abdomen
- Swelling of abdomen
- Un-usual tissue lumps in the abdomen
- Weight loss without sufficient cause
Other Forms of Malignant Mesothelioma
Except the two locations as mentioned above, mesothelioma occurring at remaining locations is very much rare and its signs and symptoms are also not clear as compared to the pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. However mesothelioma occurring in the tissues surrounding the heart may cause some symptoms like difficulty in breathing or pain in the chest. Similarly mesothelioma affecting the tissues of testicles may be indicated as a mass on a testicle being abnormal in its size.

Whenever you fell any sign and symptoms as described in above lines, consult your doctor without wasting any time in order to get diagnosed the actual disease. Early diagnosis always protects disease to convert in its malignant form and the disease can also be treated effectively. As you learnt that the sign and symptoms of malignant mesothelioma are not the specific to the disease, also mesothelioma is rare disease; the most probably they indicate some other disease. Hence thorough medical investigations are required if the symptom are persistent.
How to prevent Mesothelioma
Exposure to asbestos is one of the main causes of mesothelioma so it is imperative to protect your body from exposure to asbestos. Here are given some important points to prevent from asbestos resulting in malignant mesothelioma:-
Work Place Safety
First of all make sure that your work place is safe and there is no risk of asbestos. The most effected personnel from asbestos fibers are miners, factory workers, insulation manufacturers, ship builders, construction workers or auto mechanics. So always ensure that your work is safe from exposure to asbestos fibers.
Follow Safety Rules Set for a Specific Work Environment
Never forget to take all safety precautions designed for a specific work place. Your doctor may also advise you some extra safety measures to prevent from asbestos exposure, keeping in view your health state and temperament, so consult your doctor. Wear all safety clothing and accessories required.
Be Aware from Asbestos in Old Homes and Building
The possibility of asbestos can not be ruled out in old homes and buildings, so always be careful. Never try to remove asbestos at your own if found as it is proved more dangerous than to leave it intact. On breaking the asbestos it will become airborne and the inhaling risk be increased. Always hire qualified experts for asbestos detection and removing it from your houses if found.
